Starting today, many Times readers will see a slight change in their subscription bills. They will be asked whether they wish to donate $1 to a Times fund to provide news-papers in classrooms.
Last year, 3,000 teachers and 89,000 students received newspapers donated by individuals and businesses. Hundreds of teachers are now on a waiting list because they do not yet have sponsors.
Dollars for Scholars, a project of the Times' Newspaper in Education program, expects to get readers involved in sponsoring newspaper supplies for thousands more students.
"This is one of our efforts to reach out into the community and show them how helpful a newspaper can be in people's lives," said Mike Foley, community relations director. "It is our goal that it becomes part of outreach to schools."
