Meeting set on dredging

The Southwest Florida Water Management District will hold an informational meeting on its project to dredge the Leslie Heffner Canal. The meeting will be from 4 to 8 p.m. July 13 at the Citrus County Auditorium. The project, which could begin later this month, is intended to allow more water to flow from the Withlacoochee River into the Floral City pool of Lake Tsala Apopka.

Trail will join "Greenway'

The Withlacoochee State Trail will be one of 150 greenways across the state recognized by Gov. Lawton Chiles as part of the state's 150th birthday. In a ceremony in Tallahassee on Wednesday, the governor will kick off the celebration by recognizing 33 recreational greenways in the state, including the Withlacoochee, with a proclamation declaring it an official "Florida Greenway." Chiles created the Florida Greenways Commission in 1993 to begin a statewide system of connected greenways linking natural spaces, open areas, historical sites and parks.
