Castagner stops Seminole 3-0

Joe Castagner went the distance, firing a three-hitter and helped his own cause blasting a three-run homer in the first inning as Pinellas Park National blanked Seminole 3-0 in a winners bracket game of the District 5 Majors (ages 11-12) baseball all-star tournament Wednesday night.

Kip Perry reached base on a single followed by Anthony Terranova who was hit by a pitch to set up Castagner's blast.

In other games, Joe Bulliner and Chris Garrand hurled a no-hitter as Northwest blanked Southwest 2-0 in a losers bracket game.

Rocky Skyler had a triple and double to spark Northwest offensively and keep its hopes alive.

9/10 Baseball: Eric Trimble fired a five-hitter and fanned 10 as Northwest downed Meadowlawn 5-1 in a losers bracket game on Wednesday night.

David Davis, Charlie Fields and Trimble all had run-scoring singles while Chris Bombicino and Michael Appugliese contributed run-scoring hits.

In other games, Carlos Nunez and Justin Morris four hits and fanned six as Seminole edged Cross Bayou 2-1.

Chris Melnick led the offense with a single and double and Nunez and Morris each added two hits.

Majors Softball (ages 11-12): Brandy Berarducci and Jackie Civello each had two hits to power Seminole past Gulfport 10-0 in a losers bracket game.

Christy Beken picked up the win for Seminole.

In other games, Jill Blatti went the distance and fanned five as Northeast edged Meadowlawn 5-4. Celeste Reed had a single to give Northeast the lead while Jessice Morin, Stephanie Peck and Heather Chisholm had key hits.

Seniors Softball (ages 13-15): Kristin Kravitz collected four hits, including a double and also picked up the win to carry Meadowlawn past Pinellas Park National 10-6.

Stephanie Bozenhardt added three hits.

Karrie Machen collected four hits and had three RBI to lead Seminole to a 22-4 romp over Azalea in a winners bracket game.

Machen also teamed with starting pitcher Asya Gordon and Danyielle Smith finished the game as the trio combined for the win.

Courtney Lewellen contributed to the offense with three hits, including a double and Laura Griffith, Nichole Robbins, Marin Lazaris and Alicia Stasko all had two hits each.

In other games, Amanda Groves and Jennifer Barto had two hits each to lift Cross Bayou past Northwest 10-9.

Seniors Baseball (ages 13-15): Jason Lazaris allowed four hits over 5 innings and Seminole broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning to defeat Baypoint 8-2 in a winners bracket game.

The defending champion was led offensively by Steve Civello and Mike Hoben who each had two hits. Kevin Cordes came on in relief in the seventh inning and got a double play to end a Baypoint threat.

Juniors Baseball (age 13): T. J. Newell worked 6 innings and struck out 14 as Cross Bayou edged Azalea 4-3.

Jarrett Gurski came on in relief to pick up the save. He also sparked the team offensively with two RBI. Sean Wilson and Charles Widmeir added doubles.

9/10 Softball: Amanda Smith scored four runs and had three hits to carry Seminole to a 24-4 victory over Northeast.

Rachel Paroulek added two hits for Seminole.
