The Oakhurst area has a new restaurant. The old Dugout has been refurbished and now is home to a 170-seat steak and seafood place called McGarvey's American Bar & Grille.
The restaurant has a sports- bar motif, with darts, live music and big-screen television.
But owner Al Gannon wants the green and white decorated restaurant to be known mainly for its food. "Yes, it's a sports bar, but the focus here is on the food," said Gannon, who also owns and operates Sneaky's sports bar in St. Petersburg.
McGarvey's has a large dining room, barroom and an outdoor deck. The restaurant at Oakhurst Triangle shopping center in Seminole has seafood and steak dinners, as well as sandwiches, salads, pizza and snack foods. A weekly buffet lunch is $3.95, and on Sundays and Wednesdays, an all-you-can-eat pasta, soup and salad bar is $5.95. Take-out and delivery also are available.
A native of Philadelphia, Gannon, 47, said he has been working in restaurants all his life.
"This is what I've always done. I grew up in the business," he said. "My father had a restaurant."
Before moving here 15 years ago, Gannon said, he was running five restaurants.
If his plans work, he expects to open at least that many McGarvey's in Pinellas County and other Florida communities. "I'm building a chain of McGarvey's, and this is the first of many," he said.
The second McGarvey's is to open in January in the Dunedin Causeway Plaza shopping center, Gannon said. The third restaurant will be in Palm Harbor and also will open next year.
