Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat hailed Yitzhak Rabin as a brave leader.
The head of the Palestinian Authority told reporters at his Gaza headquarters: "I am very sad and shocked at this awful and terrible crime against one of the brave leaders of Israel and one of the peacemakers.
"I hope that we will have the ability _ all of us, Israelis and Palestinians _ to overcome this tragedy against the peace process, against the whole situation in the Middle East."
He offered his condolences to Rabin's widow and family, the Israeli government and the Israeli people. "It is not only my condolences. It is all the Palestinian people," he said.
