ABC getting Beatles fever

Published Oct. 4, 2005

The on-network promotion blitz by ABC for the three nights of the Beatles Anthology next week got under way Wednesday night with the use of two famous Beatles tunes on The Drew Carey Show (a bit of I Saw Her Standing There) and on The Naked Truth (the replacing of the program theme with Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.)

Tonight, all four of ABC's TGIF sitcoms will open with Beatles music, while three of them will also "slip in a sly allusion" to the Fab Four. Family Matters at 8, which opens with A Hard Day's Night, will include Beatles look-alikes in a talk show audience and Boy Meets World at 8:30 (She Came in Through the Bathroom Window) will work in three of the Monkees: Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork. Step by Step at 9 (Love Me Do) deals with rock 'n' roll "roadies" and Hangin' With Mr. Cooper opens at 9:30 with Got to Get You Into My Life.

On Sunday, before Part I of the anthology begins at 9, America's Funniest Home Videos will use Birthday as a background for birthday videos and on Tuesday, characters on Home Improvement at 9 will offer their own interpretations of Do You Want to Know a Secret and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. On Wednesday, Grace Under Fire at 9 will open as usual with Aretha Franklin's version of Lady Madonna.

And surely we can't forget that during the Monday Night Football game between the 49ers and Dolphins Nov. 20 (otherwise a non-Anthology night), ABC has dug up a tape of the late Howard Cosell's Dec. 9, 1974, interview with John Lennon.

The Beatles Anthology consists of two hours each night, starting Sunday and continuing on Wednesday and Thanksgiving nights.
