In an interview at the Hernando County Jail early Saturday, Jimmy Dale Smith talked about how LSD fried his mind and caused him to snap on Jan. 11 when he shot and killed two teachers.
Smith, 19, who lives south of Brooksville, spoke in matter-of-fact tones as he described shooting Hernando High School teachers Mike Imhoff, 40, and Joseph "Mike" Bristol, 41. Smith said it seemed like a game when he shot at a Hernando sheriff's deputy later that evening.
During the rambling and disjointed interview, Smith said LSD "totally fried my mind." The killings occurred after a roadside confrontation north of Brooksville in which Smith demanded the teachers' truck. He said he decided to kill the teachers after they laughed at him.
Smith said he was sorry for what he had done.
Several hours after the interview, Smith appeared before Circuit Judge Hale Stancil, who ordered that Smith be held without bail. Smith was being held on the following charges: two counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and two counts of carjacking.
