IN SECTION B // Robber slips by searchers

Sheriff's officials spent Saturday morning searching for a man who was befriended by two grocery store clerks that he later threatened and robbed.

Patty McKean, 38, was behind the cash register at The Corner Store on Arbor Street and County Road 581 when the robber struck about 7:45. Daughter Terri McKean, 15, also at the counter, dialed 911. Neither was hurt.

The man got away in a blue pickup, which he later abandoned as he fled into some woods near the Withlacoochee State Forest. Sheriff Charles Dean, who boarded a helicopter to help, said later that the man eluded searchers around noon. He was still at large at Citrus Times press time.
