Where/when: men's 50-kilometer racewalk trials, April 20, LaGrange, Ga.
Who: At least 15 racewalkers will participate. At least two, and possibly three, will make the Olympic team. A country's number of qualifiers for the Olympics depends upon the number of walkers who have completed the 50K (31 miles) in 4 hours or less. So far, two U.S. racewalkers have reached that time standard.
Top contenders: Andrej Chlynski of Colorado Springs and Allen James of LaGrange, Ga., are the top seeds and the only two Americans who have met the 4-hour time standard. The next three favorites are Herman Nelson of Seattle, Marco Evoniuk of San Francisco and Carl Scheuler of Colorado Springs. The 50K is just one Olympic racewalking event. The men's 20K racewalk and women's 10K racewalk trials will be held during the track and field Olympic trials in Atlanta in June.
