Achievement academy honors Powell pupil

Michael Ryan recently was named a U.S. National Award winner in English by the U.S. Achievement Academy. Ryan is a Powell Middle School pupil and was nominated by Gloria Uvanni, one of his instructors. He will appear in the U.S. Achievement Academy official yearbook. Michael is the son of Jane and Edward Ryan of Spring Hill.

Florida Dance Masters

certifies woman to teach

Erin Gill of Spring Hill recently passed exams in ballet, tap and acrobatics to make her a certified teacher in Florida Dance Masters Inc. The association consists of progressive instructors who assemble with other professional colleagues to exchange ideas and methods to broaden the basics of dance.

Springstead grad gets LaSertoma scholarship

Leanne Chiarello, a graduate of Springstead High School, recently received a $500 scholarship from the Hernando LaSertoma Club. Chiarello, of Spring Hill, will enter the University of Florida this fall.

Two local graduates

make Stetson dean's list

Matthew Kottmann of Brooksville and Brandon Lee Knox of Spring Hill were named to the spring semester dean's list at Stetson University, DeLand. The list includes undergraduates with a 3.5 grade-point average. Kottmann, a graduate of Hernando High School, is the son of Elizabeth L. and Robert T. Kottmann. Knox, a graduate of Central High School, is the son of Rhinda and Steven Knox.

Westside class turns

pop tops into charity cash

Westside Elementary School's fourth-grade ASTROS class recently collected more than 55 pounds of soda can pop tops for which they collected $23.20. The money was donated to the Ronald McDonald House at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.

County utilities unit

wins national honor

The Hernando County Utilities Department recently received a 1996 National Association of Counties Achievement Award for its Sharps Disposal Program. The program is for the disposal of hypodermic needles and lancets (sharp medical instruments). The award was "in recognition of its distinguished and innovative contribution to improving and promoting county government in the United States."

Spring Hill Lions give

four students $1,500

The Spring Hill Lions Club gave a $1,500 scholarship to each of the following high school students: Erika R. Jason and Lindsey S. Dubock, both of Springstead High School, and Andrew Cappiello and Richard Garti, both of Central High School.

Jason will attend the University of South Florida, Tampa; Dubock will attend Santa Fe Community College, Gainesville; Cappiello will attend Jacksonville University; and Garti will attend ITT Technical Institute, Tampa.

Coast Guard auxiliary

honors several members

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 15-08 recently honored several of its members. They are Clyde Spindler for his 20 years membership; Mae Gottheld for 15 years; Thelma Hart and Ed Lehning for 10 years; and Tony Soper for five years. Tony Naglieri was honored for 20 years as an auxiliary member in the northern region and Florida. Jack Padavano, Tony Soper and Marvin Isaacson are New Century Club members for each inspecting more than 100 recreational boats. Chuck Morton, Al Camoin and Joe Walsh were recognized for completing the instructor trainer program. Doug Whelan, Rick Turner and Chuck Bernhardt completed certification as vessel examiners. Brenda Glenny, Doug Whelan and Bernard Sharpe finalized and passed the administrative course. John Karpiscak and Thornton Embry received certification for offering boats as patrol and search and rescue vessels.

Brooksville 4-year-old

crowned national queen

Lauren Parrish was crowned the 4-year-old National Queen in the Hearts of Love National Pageant held recently in Ocala. Lauren also won swimwear, sportswear and portfolio and was first runner-up for most photogenic. She is the daughter of Vicki and Chris Parrish of Brooksville.
