Yin and Yang

It's a symbol that pops up often - on vitamin labels, Chinese restaurant menus, personal ads in the newspaper, and even as icons on the World Wide Web.

But what does it mean?

The following, black-and-white image of Yin and Yang represent the two basic, contrary forces at work in the world; male and female, hard and soft, life and death. The seed of each force is contained in the other, and existence is seen as a fluid interplay of the two. It's a concept rooted in the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism, elaborated by Confucianism, and not a part of American popular culture.
