Free camp helps kids better understand grief

Children ages 6-10 who have experienced the death of a loved one are invited to attend a free bereavement camp from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Quality Inn on U.S. 19 in New Port Richey. Hernando-Pasco Hospice sponsors the camps for children who are too young to attend the overnight camps.

The camp allows young children to share their experiences and feelings about the death of a family member or friend during the past year.

The camp theme, Stepping Stones, uses storytelling, recreation and group discussions to lead children through the various phases of grief. The program centers on the story of Buster the Bear, whose mother has died; Buster's friendship with other woodland animals; and the teaching of the seven stepping stones toward inner healing.

At the end of the day, each child will receive a handmade pouch containing a polished stone such as the one that Buster receives in the story.

For information on the program, call (813) 863-7971 or (800) 486-8784.
