Lutz can't hold on to lead, Oviedo rallies for 6-5 win

A one-inning game would have been just fine for Lutz juniors coach Leonard Britten. Unfortunately there were still six others to play.

After scoring five runs in the first inning, Lutz, the District 13 champions, was shut out the rest of the way and fell to District 14 champion Orlando Oviedo 6-5 in Section 3 tournament play held at the Hunt/Fountain Sports Complex.

Marcus Russell got Lutz off to a racing start with an infield single and advanced to second on an error. Jimmy Stamps followed with a single and took second on an overthrow. Pitcher Brian Scoville helped his own cause by driving both runners home with a single to rightfield.

After the next two batters were retired by popouts, Trevor Spence and Todd Britten each walked to load the bases. Clint Bliss singled to bring home Scoville to make the score 3-0. Consecutive walks by Matt Hayes and Russell brought home two more for a 5-0 lead after the top half of the inning.

David Golden led off the inning with a double followed by an error and a walk to load the bases with one out. Jeff Cook singled to right to bring home two and then Jason Prather singled to center to make the score 5-3.

The rally unraveled Scoville on the mound.

"Brian pitched a good game for us, that is not what lost us this game," Britten said. "We just didn't play Lutz baseball by moving up runners when we had them on base."

In the fifth inning a misplayed ball by Nicholas Britten in rightfield led to a Oviedo run to cut the lead to 5-4. Then in the sixth inning an error by Wayne Heddon put Cook on base and scored later on a sacrifice.

With the tying run on third, Oviedo coach Fred Pineiro called on his son, Freddie, to execute the squeeze. Piniero appeared to bunt the ball too hard right to Scoville on the mound. But Scoville could not pick up the ball and the run scored to tie the game at 5-5.

Another error by Russell on a steal attempt may have cost Lutz the game. The runner was initially called out, but Russell dropped the high throw from Stamps and the runner was called safe. Steve Odom followed that with a single to drive home the go-ahead run.

Lutz plays in the elimination bracket starting today at 5.

District 13 representative South Brandon's seniors fell 4-0 while in the 9-10 division South Brandon moved on in the winners' bracket.

In softball, Bloomimgdale's majors moved on to winners' bracket play, while the 9-10 team from District 6, Citrus Park, defeated District 13's Bloomingdale.
