Oldsmar's 9- and 10-year-old boys team advanced the farthest of any Oldsmar Little League team in the recent District 12 All-Star tournament, but lost to Largo National 15-6 in the quarterfinals.
The Oldsmar team, managed by Ed Hammond and coached by Donnie Lee and Ed Vonnes, lost its first game by a single run to West Pasco, then won its next three games before losing to Largo National in the double-elimination tournament.
Brent Simmerman pitched a two-hit shutout as Oldsmar beat Largo American 14-0, with Kyle Hammond and Daniel Petillo each getting three hits.
In their next game, against Countryside, rain forced a delay with Oldsmar behind 5-4, but the team came back the next day to win 6-5 behind the pitching of David Hines. Then Oldsmar defeated Palm Harbor National 7-3 behind the pitching of Zak Zehnder and Simmerman and defensive standouts Brian Horan, Kyle Hammond and Kyle Vonnes.
The senior boys, managed by Gary Pavlica, won two games and lost two.
They lost their first game 12-2 to Dunedin National, but then defeated Safety Harbor 6-2 and Hudson 7-0, with Jim Wagman pitching a three-hitter, before losing to Clearwater National 6-2. Scott Pavlica had two triples against Safety Harbor and David Manning hit in all four games.
Coaches for the senior boys are Jim Savarese and Ward Griffin.
None of the other Oldsmar teams won more than one game.
The major boys and junior boys baseball teams and the senior girls softball team each won a single game and lost two.
The major boys team, managed by Steve Buckles, defeated Holiday 2-1 in the first game as Nathan Brown pitched a complete game. But the team then lost 10-0 to Palm Harbor American and 6-1 to Dunedin American. Other stars were Michael Guidi, Anthony Graham and Garrett Buckles. Coaches for the team are Neal Brown and Randy Estep.
In senior girls softball, managed by Chuck Wall, the players lost their first game to West Pasco 19-7, then defeated West Pinellas 22-16 before losing to Safety Harbor National 15-2. The stars for Oldsmar were Melanie Debord, Tiffany Phillips and Erica Wall. The coaches are Scott Weinstein and Barry Griffin.
The junior boys, managed by Mark Dorey, won their first game 6-4 against Palm Harbor National, but then lost the next two games, 11-6 to West Pasco and 11-1 to East Lake. Stars for the team were Greg Buckles, Greg Crawford, Gary Roebuck and Shaun Phillips. Coaches are Gary Roebuck Sr. and Dave Shambled.
The 9- and 10-year-old girls and major girls softball teams each lost both of their games.
The major girls, managed by Chuck Pittman, lost to Palm Harbor National in their first game and to East Lake in the second game. Oldsmar stars were Lauren Neel, Erica Weaver, Jacqueline Justinano and Tara Pittman. Coaches are Dion Weaver and Arlene Weinstein.
The younger girls, managed by Jim Hayes, lost 15-7 to East Lake. Against West Pasco, they came back from eight runs down, but finally lost 14-13. Stars for the Oldsmar team were Rachel Riley, Oriana Asmar and Elaine Haley. Coaches for the team are Larry Liebling and Larry Gilbert.
