Tax could buy reclaimed water lines

(ran NTP edition)

If Hillsborough County Commissioner Jim Norman has his way, the proposed half-cent sales tax will bring not only a new stadium to Tampa but also reclaimed water to Northdale and Original Carrollwood.

With $6-million allotted for water and sewer improvements if the half-cent sales tax is passed by voters in September, Norman proposes laying a pipeline through Northdale and Original Carrollwood for reclaimed water _ odorless, colorless, recycled wastewater used mostly for lawns.

The proposal would extend the $3-million Carrollwood Village project, which is under way, and Hayward Place, Bardmoor Place and Northampton subdivisions would be next to receive reclaimed water.

The county will conduct a study in the next few weeks to see if Norman's idea is feasible.

Northdale already uses reclaimed water for its medians. Original Carrollwood residents, however, rely on Florida Cities Water Co. for their water and have seen high water bills.

Having reclaimed water will help reduce those bills, Norman said.
