Toward a war memorial

Gov. Lawton Chiles holds a ceremonial bill-signing Monday establishing a commission to raise money for a Korean War monument. The monument, honoring Florida's veterans, would be near the Capitol. Above, Chiles hands out souvenir pens as he faces one of the bill's sponsors, Sen. Pat Thomas, D-Quincy, a Korean War veteran. Behind Chiles are Emmett Benjamin, left, of Florida Korean War Veterans, and David Snyder Jr., vice president of the Florida VFW. At right is Boo Yul Park, Republic of Korea consul. About 55,000 Americans were killed in the Korean War, often called the "forgotten war." About 312,500 Korean War veterans live in Florida.
