Successful students built from sand

Do you like to build sand castles? Would you like to build castles and help homeless children get a good start for the coming school year?

Coalition for the Homeless is looking for 30 community teams to compete in the eighth annual Sand Sculpting Contest to benefit homeless children. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 10 at Holiday Inn Madeira Beach, 15208 Gulf Blvd.

This year's theme is "To the Stars and Beyond." There is no entry fee but team members and observers are asked to donate back-to-school items for children, such as clothing, school supplies and backpacks. The goal is to provide homeless children with a new outfit and a fully stocked backpack for the first day of school.

The coalition serves more than 2,000 children. On any given day there are 200 to 250 homeless children in Pinellas County's homeless, domestic violence and transitional housing facilities. This program is designed to help these children successfully begin the school year.

Donations are welcome on the day of the event and may be dropped off at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 10891 102nd Ave. N, Seminole.
