Tampa Police Department spokesman Steve Cole issued a news release Wednesday about the arrest of two Tampa Recreation Department employees accused of sexual battery against two girls who were part of a summer youth program the men supervised. The news release, however, included more than just the facts:
A published report in today's Tampa Tribune questioned why police "waited nearly a week" before the suspects were arrested. Well, you see there is this thing we do here called "investigating." It's a common practice among law enforcement officials to get this stuff called "probable cause." Sometimes you have enough to make the arrest immediately and sometimes you need to take more time to ensure you have enough evidence to arrest and successfully prosecute the suspects. This is all basic cop stuff.
