Hudson Beach reopens

Pasco County health officials reopened Hudson Beach this week after a decrease in bacteria levels.

The beach had been ordered closed beginning July 17 because of abnormally high levels of fecal coliform bacteria, indicating the presence of sewage. But health officials say the beach is safe for swimmers.

At high levels, the bacteria can cause eye, ear and nose infections for swimmers, in addition to diarrhea.

Officials think the contamination might be caused by homes along canals west of U.S. 19. Many of those homes have malfunctioning septic systems that overflow during heavy rains.
