Two brothers from Gibsonton accused of opening fire on sheriff's deputies who were chasing them were acquitted of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer Friday night.
Hillsborough sheriff's deputies were investigating an alarm at the Fort Lonesome Grocery Store, where the windows had been shot out in the early morning hours of May 21. While at the store, they heard shots nearby and followed a green van. The van's back doors opened, and two sheriff's patrol car windshields were hit with gunfire. Neither of the two deputies were injured.
Caleb Alex Colson, 23, and Joshua Adam Colson, 18, were later arrested and charged with criminal mischief, shooting into a building and two counts each of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
The brothers were tried by separate juries this week. Joshua Colson was found not guilty on all counts after less than an hour of deliberation Friday. Caleb Colson was found guilty of criminal mischief, but was acquitted of the other charges after the jury deliberated about eight hours.
