Deputy escapes injury in accident

Deputy Glen Scharfeld demonstrated the mettle of the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office Friday morning after his squad car was smashed by an out-of-control semitrailer truck.

Scharfeld was working off duty for the Florida Department of Transportation directing traffic at 5 a.m. on Interstate 75 near Interstate 4 when the semi-truck plowed through road barricades and into Scharfeld's car, said sheriff's spokesman Jack Espinosa.

After his car was knocked on its side and caught fire, Scharfeld crawled through the driver's side window to safety, Espinosa said. Both Scharfeld and the truck driver, whose name was not available, were treated and released from Tampa General Hospital.
