Lawyer shot trying to stop suicide

A former St. Petersburg resident who now is a prominent Miami lawyer is recovering from gunshot wounds he suffered while trying to stop a girlfriend from committing suicide.

Roland "Buddy" Payne Jr. was moved Friday from the intensive care unit in the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital to a regular hospital room, a spokesman said. He was listed in good condition.

Payne, 60, was shot July 13 in the abdomen, left thigh and groin by Maritza "Marti" Donacimiento, 42, of Pembroke Pines, police said. The woman came to the home Payne was renting and tried to shoot herself, police said.

Payne is the estranged husband of Gail Willingham Payne, 60, whose St. Petersburg family helped found a prominent insurance firm. She declined comment Friday, but said she and Mr. Payne moved from St. Petersburg in 1964.
