County faring well in state-tournament play

State tournament action began for Little League on Saturday and the Florida Little Major League continued its state tourney. Pinellas County teams are fairing well in both of these tournaments.

LITTLE LEAGUE: Countryside's major softball team represented Section 4, beating Section 3 8-5. Countryside trailed Section 3 most of the game, but then "scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning for a come-from-behind victory," coach Steve Weiss said.

Julia Weiss pitched, striking out six and giving up only one walk. Jessica Engelmann homered while Jennifer Battaglia, Kattrina Dowd, Kristen Engelmann, Laura Falla and Mara Weiss all contributed key hits.

The District 12 Rockies are playing for Section 4 in big-league baseball, and won 7-2 against Section three Saturday.

FLORIDA LITTLE MAJOR LEAGUE: Northwest's 11-12 team is 2-0 in their tournament, posting both victories today. Jeremy Bellotti pitched a 6-0 shutout against Jacksonville, aided offensively by two homers from Bill Edmonds. In the second game Kyle Schmidt pitched another shutout, 11-0, against Ormond Beach. Bellotti, Brandon Diaz, Brian Dopirak, Jet Pashak, Phil Peters and Schmidt all hit home runs, and Tyler Powers helped out with three hits.
