Early look falls short

If you're a fan of pop music, you've already noticed a distressing trend in Ruth Eckerd Hall's fall schedule.

Yes, it's true the hippest acts listed there are names like George Benson (with Stanley Clarke, Nov. 13), Waylon Jennings (with Jessi Colter, Nov. 1) and the Four Tops (with Frankie Vali and the Four Seasons, Oct. 25). But there's a good reason.

In the rock world, truly hip artists don't book their tours as far ahead as more established names, like, say, John Denver (Nov. 2), who might have to fit major concert halls and Las Vegas showrooms into his itenerary.

Just as concerts by k.d. lang and Patti Labelle were booked at the hall this summer with just a few months' notice, so too will more progressive acts find their way onto Eckerd Hall's schedule as fall draws nearer.

Until then, you'll have to make do with artists like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, touring with '80s one-hit wonder Kim Carnes (Oct. 4), Dan Fogelberg (Oct. 5), Air Supply and America (Oct. 27), The Temptations (Jan. 17) and the return of overly dramatic Broadway belter Mandy Patinkin (Jan. 18).
