After a lackluster first-round game, the Bloomingdale All-Stars bounced back Sunday with a 4-2 win over Inverness in the losers bracket of the Senior Softball State Championship.
Like Bloomingdale on Saturday, Inverness was down after an eight-inning, 1-0 loss to seven-time defending champion Naples. Bloomingdale took full advantage, scoring twice in the bottom of the second, then holding on in the intense sun and heat at East Point Little League.
Abbey Bowersox started the rally, reaching on an error, then scoring on Kayte Stanbery's single. Jessie Ortiz, who followed Bowersox with a base hit, scored on a ground ball by Lauren Gasparino.
"We didn't play up to our potential at all (Saturday)," Bloomingdale manager Ernie Perez said. "Defense was the No.
1 improvement. We made seven errors (Saturday), but only one today."
Inverness closed to 2-1 in the fifth, but Bloomingdale added two runs in the sixth, keyed by Ortiz' base hit.
The win earns Bloomingdale a rematch at 7 tonight with Boynton Beach, which beat Bloomingdale 11-2 Saturday. Boynton Beach dropped a 9-0 decision to Naples in winners bracket action Sunday.
CITRUS PARK 16, FEDERAL 5: The Citrus Park All-Stars won their second game via the 10-run rule, beating Federal of Fort Lauderdale in four innings in the winners bracket of the 9/10 softball state tournament.
Theresa Marotta allowed six hits and struck out six in four innings while going 2-for-4 and scoring twice. Ashley Trent was 2-for-3 and Krystal Crooks was 3-for-3. Citrus Park will take the day off before hosting the winner of tonight's game between Callahan and Federal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
