Feeling that Olympic spirit

A weekly series

Although the real Summer Games are being held in Atlanta, Citrus County boasts plenty of serious athletes involved in their own summer games. Some are competing in regional tournaments, others are warming up for their fall seasons and still others are merely staying in shape. Here are some shots of these athletes as they work out at local venues.

Mark Waybright works out at Whispering Pines pool as he prepares for his final season on the Citrus High School swim team. Last year Waybright set the school record in the 200 individual medley, bettering the previous mark, held by his brother Shane, by one second. Waybright also is a lifeguard at the pool.

Pitcher Gina Reynolds of the Inverness Senior Softball All Stars winds up during a practice session Wednesday. The team pushed defending state champ Naples into extra innings before falling 1-0 in Saturday's state playoff game.

Mike Brown puts his energy into a weightlifting workout at the Citrus Health Club in Inverness last week. Brown isn't shooting for an Olympic berth but has proven himself one of the club's strongest men.
