Roberto Donadoni assisted on the first three goals Sunday to lift the New York/New Jersey MetroStars to a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Clash before 21,212 at Giants Stadium.
Peter Vermes put the Metro-Stars ahead 2-1 in the 51st minute with a powerful left-footed shot from the top of the penalty area. Vermes' goal, his first of the season, came off a cross from Donadoni, who had taken a short corner kick from Tab Ramos.
The victory was the second in four days for the MetroStars (10-10) over the Clash (10-10), which lost 1-0 at home Wednesday.
Rob Johnson's glancing header off Donadoni's cross put the MetroStars ahead in the 36th, his second goal of the season.
Eric Wynalda tied the score three minutes later with a penalty kick, his ninth goal of the season. It followed a hand ball by Nicola Caricola in the penalty area.
A.J. Wood added a goal in the 80th minute when he ran onto a long cross-field pass from Donadoni and scored on a low shot. Rhett Harty scored in the 88th.
D.C. 2, COLUMBUS 0: Steve Rammel scored his 12th goal in the first minute and Mark Simpson made four saves as the United beat the Crew at Washington. Jesse Marsch completed the scoring in the 83rd minute. United has won six straight at RFK Stadium.
