MARLINS 8, PADRES 2: Gary Sheffield set a team record with his 28th homer, and host Florida stopped John Flaherty's 27-game hitting streak.

Flaherty, whose streak was the longest in the majors this season, was 0-for-3 against Al Leiter (11-9) and Jay Powell with a flyout, walk, popup and groundout. Flaherty had the second-longest hitting streak by a catcher, trailing only Benito Santiago's 34-gamer in 1987.

A day after San Diego routed the Marlins 20-12, Leiter combined with Powell and Robb Nen on a two-hitter. Leiter gave up two runs and both hits in 6 innings with seven strikeouts and six walks.
