TESTING YOUR BUYING POWER

The first X-Team mission was a sort-of scavenger hunt. Before the first X-Team meeting, each new member was instructed to spend $10 (which we reimbursed) any way they wanted. The purpose of this mission was to find out how each member likes to spend money as well as what he or she thinks is valuable. As you can see, each purchase told us a lot about each new member!

Louis "David" Brown III

Our guy Louis likes the movies and he likes to read.

What did he buy?: Saw Independence Day, the movie ($3.75), and bought Independence Day, the book ($5.99).

Was it worth the price?: Yes. The movie was good. Would other kids be interested in his purchase?: Yes. It was a good movie and book.

Chon Nguyen

Likes the movies, likes to skate.

What did he buy?: Went skating and saw Phenomenon, the movie.

Was it worth the price: "It was definitely worth the money because Fantasy Skate Center (in New Port Richey) is always a fun place." The movie was also good, according to Chon.

Would other kids be interested in his purchase: " I think all kids want to have fun, and skating and movies are definitely the way to have it."

Kristina Ortega

Very artistic!

What did she buy?: Colored pencils ($1.92), sketch pad ($2.99), matching earrings and necklace ($5).

Was it worth the price: While Kristina says it was worth the price ("It's very fun to draw"), if she had it to over again she might use the money to "go out somewhere."

Would other kids be interested in her purchase? Maybe. If they like to sketch.

Curtis "C.J." Perry Jr.

Loves movies and his sister!

What did he buy?: Two tickets for Independence Day for himself ($3.75) and his sister Chloe, 22 ($5.75).

Was it worth the price: Yes! It was a good movie!

Would other kids be interested in his purchase: "Yes! This movie was non-stop action. It was so cool! I want to see it again and again and again and again." (That's great C.J., but we're not paying for it!)

Alexa Roberts

Knows a good summer game when she sees one!

What did she buy?: Sonic Splash Zoom Ball water toy, ($9.99.)

Was it worth the price?: "Yes! It's something my friends and I like to do." Still, if she had the money to spend again, Alexa says she'd probably take her friend to the movies.

Would other kids be interested in her purchase?: Yes! It's fun and it gets you wet.

Wilson Sommer

Likes to have fun with his friends!

What did he buy?: Went bowling and saw Independence Day with his karate class.

Was it worth the price: Yes.

Would other kids be interested in his purchase: "Maybe. All kids are different and they may not like the same stuff."

Sarah Spitale

Knows how to throw a party!

What did she buy: A slumber party! She rented two movies ($5.33), bought ice cream ($1.50), whipped cream ($1.67) and donated the rest of the money (93 cents) to charity! Was it worth the price?: "Yes. Everybody had a good time." But Sarah says if she had it to do over again, she would probably spend her money on "a new awesome thing, like books, movies and much more. But I would spend it with my friends."

Would other kids be interested in her purchase?: "It's always fun to go to a sleepover!"

Veronica Taylor
