Members of a group seeking a referendum on a proposed East Lake recreation tax will present their plan to the Pinellas County Commission at a meeting that begins at 9:30 a.m. today in Clearwater.
Vote East Lake Community Recreational Opportunity, or VELCRO, has proposed taxing residents of the East Lake Fire Control District up to 25 cents for each $1,000 of taxable property value, with the money to be used for recreation. Commissioners will hear more about how the tax is to be spent before deciding whether to schedule a referendum. The meeting is in the fifth-floor commission chambers in the county courthouse, 315 Court St.
5 people hurt in accident
PALM HARBOR _ Five family members were injured Monday afternoon in an accident on U.S. 19 south of Nebraska Avenue, authorities said.
None of the injuries appeared to be life threatening, said Palm Harbor Fire Department spokesman Kevin Jensen.
The family's Toyota collided with a tow truck driven by Steven Constantini, who was uninjured.
Laurie Murphy, 31, and her daughter, Rebecca, 9, were taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where they were in stable condition. Murphy's son, Daniel, 6, and her sister, Melinda, 16, and her mother, Betty Spivey, 54, both of Ocala, also were injured.
