Judge sets date for ex-mayor's trial

(ran SS edition of METRO & STATE)

A Pinellas County judge Monday set Sept. 3 as the day for the criminal mischief trial of former Belleair Shore Mayor Robert Clayton. Clayton, 45, was charged with the misdemeanor after an April altercation with a Safety Harbor resident who was trying to use the town's private parking lot on the beach. Prosecutors say Clayton banged on Andre Rickard's car and dented it. Clayton, who resigned his post as mayor in the wake of publicity over the incident, was in court Monday but had nothing to say to reporters. County Judge Patrick Caddell set the trial date at the request of prosecutor Mike Andrews and defense attorney Lou Kwall.
