INSIGHTS // "I want to have black friends and white friends'

Kyshan Hardy is a black boy who went to his neighborhood school last year, Citrus Park Elementary. But if weren't for busing, he said, he wouldn't have many black friends at school.

"Most of my black friends live in west Tampa. It's not that many black people on this side of town," said the fifth-grader. "I want to have black friends and white friends."

At Citrus Park, some black kids make fun of white kids with phrases like, "you cracker," or "you white boy," Kyshan said.

"I get along with white people. I have a lot of white friends. They're just, like, friends. Ryan, I go to his house. I go to Mickey's house, I get along with Crystal. I go to (Bruce's) house sometimes. I don't think anybody should be judged by the color of their skin."
