One man died and another was wounded in an early Sunday morning gunfight in College Hill, police said.
Darryn Keith Jones, 25, of Tampa was pronounced dead at Tampa General Hospital about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. Another 25-year-old Tampa man, Michael Larry Taylor of 3118 Lindell St. was shot twice in the leg, police said. He was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital and released, police said.
Taylor said Sunday night that he and Jones were sitting in Jones' Honda Accord in the 3500 block of N 22nd Street when two hooded men on bicycles rode up and fired with rifles into the driver's side, where Jones was sitting. Taylor said he bolted from the passenger's seat, firing from a .357 revolver as he ran. He was shot several times just before he turned a corner and escaped the assailants, who were uninjured, he said.
"He didn't say, "Give it up,' or anything," Taylor said of the attackers. "He just came and unleashed."
Taylor said they went out Sunday night to celebrate what was supposed to be Jones' brief visit home from military service at Fort Hood, Texas.
Taylor said they spent several hours at a nightclub and were standing around just after 4 a.m., talking to a friend and hoping to buy some sausage from a food stand across the street when they sensed something was wrong.
"We felt some tension like something was going to happen so we rushed to the car," Taylor said.
The men had been friends since childhood.
"We grew up together," Taylor said. "We were the only two to make the Little League team and that's when we became best friends. I'm trying to cry and weep."
Police continued to investigate the shooting.
