Night sailing attempt puts pair adrift in bay's current

A woman was treated for minor injuries at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg Monday after a boating accident forced her to swim from a small island near Picnic Island Park to Venetian Isles in St. Petersburg, Tampa police said.

Rebecca Briggs, 26, and Adam Cline, 25, were trying to sail a dinghy from their 28-foot sailboat anchored in Tampa Bay to a nearby island about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

A strong current kept the small boat from reaching shore so the two abandoned the dinghy and tried to swim the distance instead. When that didn't bring them any closer to land, they attempted to swim back to the dinghy, but only Cline was able to climb aboard the boat, police said.

Cline lost sight of Briggs and drifted ashore in St. Petersburg, uninjured. Authorities searched the waters for Briggs, and found her at Venetian Isles about 2 a.m., police said.

Police said the only address given by Briggs and Cline was a post office box in Tampa.
