2 spring breakers hurt in falls

One spring breaker has been released from a hospital but another remained in critical condition Tuesday after separate falls from balconies.

Falls from hotel room balconies injure and sometimes kill spring breakers almost every year in resort communities such as this one in the Florida Panhandle.

Carter W. Gray, 24, of Independence, Ky., suffered a fractured skull, broken ribs, collapsed lungs, a broken leg and abdominal injuries Saturday in a fall of at least four stories at the Days Inn, police said. Gray, who friends said had been drinking with them, apparently was trying to climb up a plastic drain pipe from a fourth floor balcony when he fell, police Cpl. Chad Lindsey said.

"It's just PVC pipe and apparently when he put all his weight on it, about a 6-foot section broke loose and he fell," he said. "He landed on the concrete back deck."

Gray remained in the surgical intensive care unit in critical condition Tuesday at Bay Medical Center in nearby Panama City.

Anthony Milosh, 18, of Indiana was hospitalized a week earlier but has been released after falling from a second-floor balcony at another hotel.
