It's time to S-P-E-L-L it out

The Suncoast Spelling Bee will be held today in the auditorium of the St. Petersburg Times, 490 First Ave. S in downtown St. Petersburg.

Twelve students have competed in classroom, school and county competitions before coming to the regional Suncoast Spelling Bee. The Suncoast winner will represent the St. Petersburg Times and the four-county area in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee May 26-30 in Washington, D.C. In all, 245 spellers will compete at the national level.

Here, by county, are the participants:

Pinellas

Andy Goldfield, eighth grade, Oak Grove Middle School.

Jeff Lee, sixth grade, Tyrone Middle School.

Rachel St. Cere, eighth grade, Pinellas Park Middle School.

Citrus

Craig Edmonds, eighth grade, Crystal River Middle School.

Heather Murray, seventh grade, Crystal River Middle School.

Amanda Rose, sixth grade, Central Catholic School.

Hernando

Kelly Cox, eighth grade, Hernando Christian Academy.

Dacia Frye, sixth grade, Parrott Middle School.

Kylie Quave, eighth grade, Parrott Middle School.

Pasco

Jessye Lowe, eighth grade, River Ridge Middle School.

Larkin Reynolds, eighth grade, Pasco Middle School.

Brett Walsh, sixth grade, Seven Springs Middle School.

The winner receives a trip with an accompanying parent to compete in the National Spelling Bee, a plaque for the student and a plaque for the student's school from the St. Petersburg Times, a dictionary and a gift certificate for Spelling Bee merchandise from Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. Second- through fifth-place winners will receive awards including U.S. savings bonds.

This event is free and open to the public. The St. Petersburg Times and Delta Zeta Sorority alumnae are the sponsors.

Eddie Moran, Times literacy and education program administrator, coordinates the Spelling Bee.
