A 32-year-old woman involved in a head-on collision Tuesday that left one man dead is the foster mother of an abused child in the news recently.
Carol Esposito was listed in guarded condition at St. Joseph's Hospital on Wednesday after a Tuesday night accident on N Dale Mabry Highway near Hillsborough Avenue. Esposito is the foster mother of Eric Shumpert Jr., a toddler who drew attention earlier this year after his parents were charged with torturing the young boy.
Also in the Dodge pickup truck were Esposito's two children, Theresa Esposito, 9, who was listed in critical condition with head injuries; and Lindsey George, 11, listed in fair condition with a broken leg.
Nicole Esposito, one of seven children in the family, said she was taking care of the youths while her mother was in the hospital. Mrs. Esposito was driving north on N Dale Mabry Highway about 8:50 p.m. when Son My Doan, 29, speeding southbound, crossed the concrete median strip and rammed her truck. He died at the scene, police said.
"The kids are asking for her but doing fine," Nicole Esposito said. "We just praise the Lord they're alive."
