Last of church unbeatens: defending champ, new team

Only two teams remain unbeaten in church softball action _ one in the A Division (defending champion Inverness Church of God No. 1) and one in the B Division (league newcomer Brooksville Eden Baptist). The women's division has a three-team race that may go the distance.

WOMEN'S DIVISION

Our Lady of Fatima 9, Inverness Church of God 2: In a game that was scoreless after the top half of the second inning, Fatima scored early and often to knock COG out of a first-place tie. Lisa Rummel and Kristy Garcia teamed up for five RBI, with Rummel going 4-for-4. GOG was held to six hits by Debbie Frank.

Fort Cooper Baptist 10, Floral City First Baptist 9: Fort Cooper, winless and playing with only nine fielders, came from behind with a three-run seventh for its first win of the year. Carla Falabella and new addition Marilyn Rowe scored three times each and combined for six hits, with Rowe knocking in five runs for Fort Cooper. Floral City had inside-the-park homers by Jennifer Hibbard and Jennifer Hannie, who had six hits and seven RBI between them.

MEN'S A DIVISION

Inverness Church of God No. 1 12, Floral City First Baptist 8: Winless Floral City put a scare in unbeaten COG by scoring five times in the top of the first, but strong defense and a five-run effort in the bottom of the first put Church of God back in the game. Greig Eadler parked a two-run homer and McKinley Franklin had three hits and three RBI for the victors. Mark Fulkerson had a three-run single for Floral City in the first.

Inverness First Assembly of God 14, Seven Rivers Presbyterian 13: Facing a must-win situation, AOG came back from a 13-9 deficit and scored twice in the seventh when Joe Deddo knocked in the game winner. Scott Elling's hit and pair of two-run homers and Rick Sims' three hits kept AOG in the chase. John Stephenson and Tim Bowman (two-run homer) teamed up for seven RBI for Seven Rivers.

Inverness First Baptist Blue 19, Christian Center Church 7: In a battle of 3-1 teams, Blue used a six-run second and eight-run third to cruise to the mercy-rule win. Bill Mitchell had three hits and four RBI, including a three-run homer, while winning pitcher Skip Norton had five hits and three RBI for Blue.

Fort Cooper Baptist A 14, Our Lady of Fatima 7: Though playing with only eight fielders, Fort Cooper again played long ball, hitting seven home runs against winless Fatima. Shortstop Bobby Barton led the hit parade with three solo homers, while Milton Byers had an pair and Mike D'Ambrosio and Cliff Thompson had one each. Dan Allen and Ryan Reinhart each had three hits including a homer.

MEN'S B DIVISION

Brooksville Eden Baptist 17, Inverness First Lutheran 5: In the long-awaited showdown between the last unbeatens in the B Division, Eden needed just five innings for the win (its first of two mercy-rule wins on the day). James Price, Jason Jernigan and Darin Engle combined for eight hits, six runs and nine RBI while batting in the bottom half of the order. Only J.R. Wood and Wayne Mills managed two-hit games for Lutheran.
