Bryan Dairy resort plan called off

Plans to build a resort on Bryan Dairy Road catering to golf and tennis enthusiasts are off, once again leaving that area of south Largo and north Seminole without a major hotel.

Construction of the Bardmoor Golf & Tennis Resort, a 95-unit time share hotel, was expected to start last year, but the deal between developer Ron Lybeck and the owner fell through.

Now the owner, Bardmoor/Bayou Club Limited, is asking the county to rezone the 5 acres so that any new potential developers could build town houses.

Company vice president Teri Oechsle said some developers are interested in buying the property but only if it is zoned residential, allowing them to add town houses to an area that already boasts one large subdivision, Bayou Club Residential Estates. She declined to say who was interested in the property.

Bardmoor/Bayou Club Limited, part of a Chicago-based holding company, owns the Bayou Club Residential Estates and two nearby 18-hole golf courses, Bayou Golf Club, a private course, and Bardmoor Golf Club, a public course. Since 1990, the company has sold about 65 percent of the houses in the subdivision.

The 5 acres at 8000 Bryan Dairy Road between Belcher and Starkey roads are assessed for tax purposes at $620,000, according to the Pinellas County Property Appraiser's Office.

The proposed resort would have filled a void in a part of Pinellas County that has no major hotels or motels.

The five-story hotel would have targeted golf and tennis players and visitors who are in town to do business with area corporations, such as the Jack Eckerd Corp. and Martin Marietta on Bryan Dairy Road.

It would have sold units primarily as time-share condos, although some nightly rentals would have been available. Renters would have been able to exchange their time at the Bardmoor resort for time at resorts owned by big hotel chains all over the world.
