Accident at traffic light leaves man hospitalized

A 58-year-old man was in fair condition Friday night after his convertible was hit by a car that ran a red light, police said.

Just after 6 p.m., Luis J. Manuel, 60, of 1950 Robinson Drive N, St. Petersburg, ran a red light as he headed west in his 1984 Ford pickup on Ninth Avenue N at 28th Street, Officer Joe Pratt said.

The pickup struck a 1991 LeBaron convertible driven by Robert Schnering, of 3024 29th St. N., who was driving north on 28th Street. The driver's side door started opening and Schnering started to fall out of the car when it slammed into the left front of a 1992 Toyota pickup truck stopped at the traffic signal.

Schnering suffered head injuries and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center. No one else was injured in the crash.

Pratt is investigating whether alcohol may have been a factor in the accident. Manuel was cited for a red light violation.
