High-speed crash kills one, injures two

A 28-year-old woman was killed and two of her passengers were injured when the vehicle she was driving overturned off Moccasin Slough Road at 1:25 a.m. Friday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The driver, Deborah A. McQuillan of 6430 E Kent St., died at the scene, the FHP said.

Her two passengers, Melissa Jane Wood, 28, of 10055 East Lake Estates Drive in Inverness and Kathleen Lynn Kowalski, 28, of Glendale Heights, Ill., both suffered incapacitating injuries, the FHP said.

Both were taken to Citrus Memorial Hospital on Friday morning, but Kowalski was soon taken by ambulance to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.

Wood was reported in fair condition late Friday. Kowalski was listed in serious condition.

According to the FHP, McQuillan's 1987 Ford was speeding east on Moccasin Slough when she lost control.

The vehicle traveled onto the north side of the road and struck a fence, then went airborne and landed in woods nearby, where it struck a tree.

The vehicle came to rest on its roof.
