Never has a fourth-place finish been so important to a Seminole High track team.
Anchor Shawn Condra held on for fourth for the Warriors in the Seminole Invitational final event, the 4x400 relay to preserve a tie for the boys championship with archrival Osceola, 98 points each.
Seminole had led 93-90 going into the final event and the five points gained by Condra offset the eight that Osceola pick up with its second-place finish in the relay.
Lakewood was the easy winner in the relay at 3 minutes, 25.25 seconds while Osceola (3:35.9) and Seminole 3:37.6 followed.
Lakewood was the girls' winner in another very tight team race.
The Spartans and East Lake were tied at 113 with two events left. Emily Saunders led Lakewood to a 1-6-8 finish in the 2-miler while East Lake didn't score.
The Spartans also won the 4x400 relay (4:18.2) while East Lake did no better than fourth. The Spartans won 137-118.
Saunders also won the mile (5:32) while Rose Richmond was a triple winner for the Spartans with a first in the long jump (17 feet, 3} inches), the triple jump (36-5}) and the 220 (26.19).
Sean McCabe of East Lake staked his claim as the county's top distance runner with a convincing win over chief rival Chris Irving of Seminole in the mile run. McCabe finished in 4:30 and won the 880 in a 2 minutes.
