Your yard could be a star

Does your yard need a face lift?

Three Tampa Bay home landscapes are needed to star in a cable television show, This Florida Yard. Each one will be renovated by experts from the Florida Yards & Neighborhoods program and the process will be documented on camera.

The idea is modeled after the popular series, This Old House, in which an aging house is remodeled by a crew of workers and the homeowners, working side by side.

Three to five yards will be selected in each of three counties: Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough. Homeowners will pay all materials costs associated with the project and they can hire professionals to do the labor or do it themselves. They'll receive free advice on planning, analyzing site conditions, selecting plants, installing an irrigation system and maintaining the new landscape.

The finished yards will demonstrate all the principles promoted by the Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Program: efficient water use, energy conservation and wildlife habitat. They'll be featured on a half-hour program shown on each county's government access cable channel.

Applications are due April 5 and the projects will start by June. For an application form call 582-2108 in Pinellas County, (352) 521-4288 in Pasco and 744-5519 in Hillsborough.
