If you see smoke rising from the Brooker Creek Preserve today, don't worry. It's a controlled burn. The park's staff had planned the burn-off for Tuesday but postponed the fires because the wind would have blown smoke into the Crescent Oaks housing area, said Mark Dosmann, assistant manager of the preserve. Wind today is expected to come from the southwest. If that is the case, the fire will be started in a 23-acre area just north of the Upper Pinellas Youth Sports Complex off Old Keystone Road.
The wind will blow the smoke over an uninhabited wooded area. The burn is the first of a series of controlled fires to burn underbrush and other combustible materials that could make uncontrolled fires dangerous, Dosmann said.
Officials expect to open Beckett Bridge by Friday
TARPON SPRINGS _ The Beckett Bridge, which connects east and west Tarpon Springs above the bayous, is still scheduled to open by Friday, said Lloyd Thomas of the Pinellas County Public Works Department.
Electricians are spending this week troubleshooting electrical problems, Thomas said. "It will be open by the end of the week, if not a day earlier," he said. "We have to make sure it's safe. We can't have (the drawbridge) snapping up when somebody is on it."
