A Palm Harbor man is the first person indicted in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida under a federal law intended to reduce domestic violence. Danny W. Barnes, 50, was indicted Tuesday on charges of possessing a firearm while subject to a restraining order and possessing an unregistered shotgun, a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tampa states. Barnes was indicted under the Violence Against Women Act. The law makes it a federal crime for someone to possess, transfer or receive a gun if he has a restraining order against him, the news release states. Barnes, a former police officer in Huntsville, Ala., could not be reached for comment.
