Tennis center teams win league

The third session of the South Pinellas Ladies Doubles League concludes this morning with round robin competition and awards to the winning teams.

In all, 12 teams of two doubles positions competed in two playing levels, 3.5 and 3.0.

St. Petersburg Tennis Center won both levels. SPTC C won the 3.5 among nine teams; SPTC was first among the 3.0 three teams.

"It was a close finish," said SPTC C co-captain Charlene Garner. "The first four teams were each separated by just a point."

Lakewood B finished second in the 3.5, followed by Feather Sound and Isla del Sol B.

"The competition was very good this session," Garner said, "and we all seemed to be close in level. We as a team did not have set partners but just sort of worked it all out."

Defending league champions SPTC C included the same players as the last session: co-captain Barbara Murray, Margaret Tseng, Rona Bleasdale, Diane Sawyer, Bev Dahlberg, Louise Strong and Gay Womack.

A 3.0 level for teams from SPTC, the Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Isla del Sol was added this season.

"We had a good time playing and especially liked not having to travel much," said Ruth Bowman, SPTC's 3.0 captain. "We plan to play the league again."

Bowman played with JoAnn Autieri and Jean Cox played with Margarite Massouda. Sally Holley was a frequent substitute for the team.
