After 12 years in mothballs, the 1.5-acre parcel at the southeast corner of Alt. U.S. 19 and the State Road 580 extension soon may be developed.
The state Department of Transportation has said it will sell the land to Loken Construction of Dunedin for $250,500, the highest of six bids. The state bought the land in 1985 and used it to widen the road and to store materials. The buildings on it were torn down a couple of years ago; the land has been vacant since.
Vern Loken said he and his son Gary have not decided what to do with the property, once the site of a Leuken grocery. But, Loken said, they expect to develop it for some type of commercial space, possibly later this year.
Among Loken's company's projects are the Logarto apartments in Dunedin.
