NOTES: Last year, Fred Couples finished with 8-under 64 for four-stroke victory over Colin Montgomerie and Tommy Tolles. Last week, Phil Mickelson won the Bay Hill Invitational at Orlando, closing with 7-under 65. The top 50 players are in same field for first time since rankings were established in 1986. Mickelson, 26, is fourth-youngest player in tour history to reach 10 victories. Tiger Woods won the first of his record three consecutive U.S. Amateur titles in 1994 at TPC of Sawgrass.

NOTES: Last year, Patty Sheehan won her sixth major title, closing with 1-under 71 for one-stroke win over Annika Sorenstam, Kelly Robbins and Meg Mallon. Last week, Laura Davies won Standard Register Ping in Phoenix for tour-record fourth straight year, beating Robbins on first playoff hole. The tournament, first played in 1972, was designated a major in 1983. Amy Alcott set tournament record of 15-under 273 in 1991. Alcott, also winner in 1983 and 1987, has 29 tour victories, one short of entering Hall of Fame. Beth Daniel, a 32-time tour winner, needs a victory in major or three regular events to reach Hall of Fame.

COURSE: Dominion Country Club (6,814 yards, par 72).

PURSE: $800,000. Winner's share is $120,000.

NOTES: Last year, Tom Weiskopf won first of two 1996 titles, closing with 3-under 69 for two-stroke victory over Gary Player, Bob Dickson and Graham Marsh. Last week, Marsh and John Bland won Legends of Golf at La Quinta, Calif., beating Hubert Green and Gil Morgan by three strokes. Weiskopf tops field along with Ray Floyd and Dave Stockton.
