(ran SP edition)
What's the best way to see where you're going when you drive in reverse? Turn your head and look through the rear window.
In fact, the Florida Driver's Handbook states: "Do not use the rearview mirror when backing. Look to the rear instead." People over 50 who may find it more difficult to turn their head far enough to see clearly should turn their shoulders also.
This is one of the many points of safe driving discussed during a 55 Alive/Mature Driving class. Produced by AARP and conducted in two four-hour sessions, 55 Alive reinforces proper driving techniques. It is open to drivers 50 and older. By law, drivers 55 and older who complete this course may be eligible for an auto insurance discount for three years.
Here is a list of class locations. Most are presented monthly year-round. Registration is required. Call the number listed for the specific location. The fee for the course is $8; bring your driver's license to the first class.
The classes are conducted by AARP-trained volunteers. If you are interested in being a volunteer teacher, call 576-2895.
