Tampa police Officer Howard Gimbel was treated for a minor neck sprain after he tried to stop a rambunctious driver at Nebraska and Fowler avenues, said Tampa police Lt. Hugh Miller.
Tampa police notified Hillsborough sheriff's deputies that a car was being driven erratically on Nebraska Avenue into their patrol zone and a blockade was set up at the intersection, Miller said.
Gimbel arrived and tried to jerk the driver's door open through the window, but the driver accelerated with Gimbel hanging out of the car, he said. The driver's name was not released late Monday. Gimbel has been with the police force for a year and a half, Miller said.
Gimbel acted according to police procedures when he approached the driver and tried to open the car door, Miller said, but "we don't encourage them do that because of the obvious dangers."
